Our speakers are qualified experts with proven expertise in the field of structural engineering. They work with passion, standing out for their desire to pass on knowledge and experience.

Ghasan Doudak

Professor of structural engineering at the University of Ottawa. His area of expertise includes multi-scale understanding of how complete structural systems function, and how complete buildings respond to the effects of windstorms, ground shaking during earthquakes and other actions like impacts and blasts. He is a member of the National Building Code Standing Committee on Structural Design, Vice Chair of the CSA O86 Technical Committee on Engineering Design in Wood, Member of the CSA s850 Technical Committee on Blast Resistant Buildings, and board member and treasurer of Canadian Association for Earthquake Engineering (CAEE).

Daniele Casagrande

Researcher at the Institute of Bioeconomy (formerly IVALSA) at the National Research Council of Italy and expert in the field of earthquake engineering applied to timber structures. He has been currently leading the working group on the accidental load situations within the European COST Action CA20139 for the holistic design of taller timber buildings. As expert member of the Italian Committee for timber structures, Dr. Casagrande participated at the revision of the timber chapter of Eurocode 8 and at the plenary Committees for the revision process of Eurocode 5.

Matteo Andreottola

Matteo Andreottola is the manager of Rothoschool and an engineer for Rothoblaas. He worked in Ireland as a structural engineer for IJM timber frame engineering. He came back to Italy after this working experience abroad, to work as a structural engineer for Xlam Dolomiti. He participated in the structural design of big projects in Australia, like Grocon, Northumberland Street and Ballarat GovHub. Currently he works in Rothoblaas as the manager of Rothoschool, organizing courses, webinars, events, seminars and formations around the world, where he participates as a speaker, managing the organization as well.

Fernanda Scussiato Lago

Research Engineer at the University of Ottawa, with expertise in the structural dynamics and vibration behavior of advanced timber systems. Her research focuses on the analysis of Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) and Timber-Concrete Composite (TCC) floors, including the influence of intermediate supports, panel connections, concrete toppings, and composite action on floor performance. Fernanda is actively involved in embodied carbon feasibility studies for large-scale civil engineering projects. Her work includes extensive numerical and experimental investigations of structural vibration parameters, walking-induced floor response, modal properties, and finite element modelling for timber, concrete and hybrid structures. She has also contributed to technical guidance related to mass timber design, including work addressing lateral design considerations for timber buildings. Her work supports the development of practical solutions aimed at improving vibration serviceability, occupant comfort, structural efficiency, and the broader implementation of sustainable construction technologies.

ALI MIKAEL

Director, Codes and Standards – Structural Engineering at the Canadian Wood Council, where he leads the structural engineering team within the Codes and Engineering department. Since joining CWC in 2018, Ali has brought more than 10 years of structural engineering experience from France and Canada, spanning the evaluation of existing structures and the design of new buildings, with a specialized expertise in dynamic analysis and earthquake design. His technical background includes R&D on the dynamic behavior of tall buildings, along with practical exposure to timber, concrete, and steel structures.

MARC ALAM

Senior Manager, Codes and Standards – Fire and Acoustics at the Canadian Wood Council, specializing in fire performance, acoustics, and code development for wood construction. With more than a decade of experience at CWC, Marc is actively involved in advancing building code initiatives, fire design tools, and research programs supporting the growth of mass timber and engineered wood construction in Canada. He earned a Ph.D. in Fire Safety Engineering from Carleton University, where his research focused on the fire behavior of heavy timber connections, combining academic expertise with practical applications for modern timber structures.
