TimXtend - Cantilever balconies on solid timber and CLT structures TIMXTEND
Structural configuration of balconies on timber buildings with TimXtend
The TimXtend system is the solution for fastening reinforced concrete cantilever balconies onto floors made from CLT panels, solving the structural and regulatory issues that until recently forced designers to compromise between sustainable construction and safety requirements.
The TimXtend system consists of three main components: the floor made from CLT panels, the HIT MVX-TS (Timber Slab) connection providing thermal insulation with thicknesses of 80 mm (HP) or 120 mm (SP), and the Rothoblaas WHTVG900 connector, which transfers loads from the prefabricated balcony to the timber floor structure.
The TimXtend system guarantees fire resistance up to REI 90, compliant with requirements for multi-storey residential buildings. The reinforced concrete balconies are supplied as prefabricated elements with the HIT connection already installed, reducing on-site operations to merely fastening with the WHTVG900 connector.
The WHTVG900 connector transfers loads through 9 fully threadedVGS screws (11 mm diameter, 200 mm length) installed at a 45° angle using the VGU washer.
The system is designed and tested for cantilever balcony depths from 1.40 to 2.20 metres.
Mechanical performance and certifications of the TimXtend system with WHTVG900 connector
In the TimXtend system, the Rothoblaas WHTVG900 connector is the structural component connecting the balconies to the timber floor slab.
The VGU washers ensure precise insertion of the thread into the timber, while the JIG VGU jig simplifies the creation of angled pilot holes, making installation on site easier.
The fastening system is certified for timber constructions according to ETA-11/0030 for timber-to-steel applications. The specially reinforced design of the WHTVG900 and the inclined fully threaded screws ensure a connection with exceptional stiffness values, minimising balcony deflection and vibration.
The HIT MVX-TS connection (available in HP version with 80 mm insulation or SP version with 120 mm insulation) achieves REI 90 performance in the TimXtend system, complying with fire resistance requirements for multi-storey residential buildings.
The CLT panels are compatible with the TimXtend system provided minimum anchorage thicknesses are respected, and the system is designed to be completely demountable.
At the end of their service life, balconies, connections and connectors can be separated and reused in other projects or recycled, a key principle of the circular economy in modern timber constructions based on Design for Disassembly principles.
What is the maximum balcony depth achievable with the TimXtend system?
The system is designed and tested for cantilever balcony depths from 1.40 to 2.20 metres. The actual maximum cantilever length depends on the thickness of the internal CLT slab, the orientation of the panels and its span.
How was the TimXtend project developed and who are the development partners?
SHORT ANSWER:
TimXtend was developed through a collaboration between three construction specialists:
RWT plus ZT GmbH (structural engineering, fire protection), Leviat/Halfen (thermally insulated connection technology) and Rothoblaas (steel connectors for timber). The project was developed by RWT plus Austria, a company specialised in lightweight structures, sustainable building systems and multi-storey timber constructions.
