HIGH-PERFORMANCE EPDM FLOOR SOUND INSULATION PIANO

The floor slab insulation for lightweight and high-load structures

PIANO is the EPDM resilient profile for floor sound insulation in floors, walls and structural elements made of timber, steel and masonry. Available in 5 versions, it covers a wide load range: from lightweight floors and floating floor systems to high-load multi-storey buildings. Some versions are pre-cut to obtain more widths with the same product. Different geometries and colours allow the correct version to be identified immediately on site.

Tested acoustic improvement > 4 dB (Δl,ij, EN ISO 10848).

CE marked according to ETA-23/0193.

Description

Technical specifications for PIANO floor slab insulation: versions, loads and performance

PIANO is the resilient profile for floor sound insulation, manufactured from extruded and expanded EPDM, 6 mm thick, VOC-free, with excellent chemical stability and UV resistance. Its elastic compound compensates for wood movement over time. It dampens vibrations under both static and dynamic conditions, achieving a theoretical reduction of up to 10 dB when used as an anti-vibration layer. Installation can be carried out using staples, PRIMER SPRAY, DOUBLE BAND or on dry battens.

Performance by version (Δl,ij > 4 dB, ISO 10848):
— PIANO A · low loads · Ec 0.23 MPa · acoustic load 0.008–0.052 N/mm² · max. load 0.15 N/mm²
— PIANO B · low loads · Ec 1.08 MPa · acoustic load 0.04–0.27 N/mm² · max. load 0.85 N/mm²
— PIANO C · medium loads · Ec 7.92 MPa · acoustic load 0.26–1.4 N/mm² · max. load 12.07 N/mm²
— PIANO D · high loads · Ec 22.1 MPa · acoustic load 1.2–2.28 N/mm² · max. load 16.9 N/mm²
— PIANO E · high loads and multi-storey applications · Ec 24.76 MPa · acoustic load 1.8–3.2 N/mm² · max. load 17.07 N/mm²
Fire reaction class E (EN 13501-1). Floor sound insulation tested on timber-to-timber joints with screws and nails.
Following a rigorous certification process, it has been tested and certified according to ETA-23/0193.

Floor sound insulation for light timber frame floors: which PIANO version should you choose?

For lightweight floors and timber frame structures, PIANO A and PIANO B are the recommended solutions, including for floating floor systems. The appropriate version should be selected by calculating the permanent load plus 50% of the characteristic imposed load in accordance with EN ISO 12354.

Floor slab insulation for CLT and LVL floors with varying loads: how to choose?

For CLT and LVL floors, loads vary depending on the number of storeys and the span. PIANO C covers acoustic loads up to 1.4 N/mm², while PIANO D and PIANO E are recommended for mass timber multi-storey structures with loads up to 3.2 N/mm². The pre-cut versions reduce waste on site.

Floor sound insulation in multi-storey buildings: PIANO or XYLOFON?

PIANO is the cost-effective solution for floor sound insulation, delivering an acoustic improvement of > 4 dB.
XYLOFON is recommended where the project requires higher performance, up to 10.6 dB, or installation on walls and structural joints. The choice depends on the load, the structure and the required acoustic performance.

Description

Resilient soundproofing profile, effective in reducing vibrations in both lightweight floors and complex buildings with high loads. Made from expanded and extruded EPDM compound, it provides excellent soundproofing performance. Its elasticity compensates for timber and structural expansion, while the compact section ensures high resistance to compression. It acts as an anti-vibration element by absorbing and dissipating system energy, both in static and dynamic conditions. VOC-free and UV-resistant.

Installation

Suitable for installation on lightweight floors, timber frame systems, and massive structures such as CLT and LVL. It can also be applied to steel and concrete using a product such as PRIMER SPRAY or DOUBLE BAND double-sided adhesive tape. To minimise vibration transfer throughout the structure, it is recommended to install the resilient profile both above and below the floor slab.

It can also be used in dry floor systems, applied to the underside and/or top side of battens. Further details regarding installation can be found in the specific instructions provided by the supplier.
