SBD SELF DRILLING DOWEL FOR CONCEALED JOIST HANGER ON STEEL AND ALUMINIUM SBD
The SBD self drilling dowel: concealed joist hanger on steel plates, featuring the fastest tip on the market
The SBD self drilling dowel is the Rothoblaas fastening system for concealed timber-to-steel and timber-to-aluminium joints, ideal for end-to-end beam connections, creating continuous beams and restoring shear and moment transfer in large timber structures.
The new self-drilling tapered tip is the fastest on the market: it drills through a 5 mm thick S355 steel plate in just 20 seconds (horizontal application with 25 kg of applied force), with no need to pre-drill the metal. This geometry reduces the required application force, allowing installation even in hard-to-reach positions.
The concealed cylindrical head allows the dowel to be driven below the surface of the timber substrate, ensuring an optimal finish in concealed joints and meeting fire resistance requirements. Made of electrogalvanised carbon steel, it is suitable for use in service classes SC1 and SC2. TX40 bit included in the box.
SBD: double thread, Ø7.5 mm and higher shear resistance for concealed joist hanger
The 7.5 mm diameter provides 15% higher shear resistance than other solutions on the market, optimising the number of dowels required for each joint. The double thread is designed with a specific geometry: the b1 thread near the tip facilitates initial driving, while the longer b2 thread beneath the head ensures fast, precise timber-to-steel fastening.
The characteristic yield moment reaches 75 Nm for versions L ≥ 95 mm. Characteristic shear resistance values reach up to 31.80 kN for the configuration with 2 internal plates (7.5 × 235 mm, 0° angle), in accordance with EN 1995:2014 and CE EN 14592 certification. Compatible with S235, S275 and S355 steel up to 10 mm thick (single plate) and with Rothoblaas ALUMINI, ALUMIDI and ALUMAXI brackets.
SBD is also certified and engineered for fastening standard Rothoblaas plates such as TYP X or F70 post bases. The Mafell A 18M BL driver is recommended at 600–2100 rpm. For correct installation, the routing in the timber must be 1–2 mm wider than the plate thickness, positioning SHIM spacers to allow steel swarf to escape.
How are concealed joist hangers made with steel plates?
The SBD self drilling dowel is driven directly through the timber and internal steel plate without pre-drilling the metal: the tapered tip drills through both the timber and the plate in a single operation. The timber must be routed to accommodate the plate, with a clearance of 1–2 mm.
The reduced diameter of 7.5 mm ensures high joint stiffness, while the concealed cylindrical head keeps the joint completely hidden. The double-thread geometry ensures the transfer of shear forces and the bending moment between the two beams, allowing continuous beams to be created even at mid-span.
